During the inauguration of the Uzoeghelu General Motor Park at Ugwu Nwasike/Nkwo Market, along Old Onitsha-Enugu road, Ogidi, Anambra, Mr. Uche Nebuwa, the National President of the Heavy Duty Truck Drivers Association, expressed his concerns about the recent hike in fuel pump prices caused by the removal of subsidies. He emphasized that the only effective solution to this issue is the repair of old refineries.
Nebuwa pointed out that the transportation industry and society as a whole are greatly affected by this fuel price increase. He also criticized the lack of consultation with transporters, such as his association, before the subsidy removal decision was made.
Referring to the purported distribution of solar lights as palliatives, Nebuwa believed it would have little positive impact on Nigerians and might even worsen the situation. He suggested that such measures were only introduced to temporarily pacify the public but would not address the root cause of the problem.
Speaking on the importance of the newly inaugurated park, Nebuwa commended the state government’s efforts to create order on the roads. He emphasized that the park was exclusively for travelers and that no touts would be tolerated.
Mr. Augustine Udeozor, the Zonal Chairman of the Southeast National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), echoed Nebuwa’s sentiments, referring to the fuel hike as a general disease that must be addressed by the Federal Government. He stressed that immediate action is needed to alleviate the suffering experienced by the masses due to the socio-economic and political challenges.
On a positive note, Mr. Obiegbu Ikeobi, the Chairman of the Njikoka Local Government Area Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, expressed optimism that with the inauguration of the spacious motor park, business activities would thrive starting from the following day.
In conclusion, the stakeholders at the event called for urgent action to repair old refineries as the most viable solution to the fuel price hike. They urged the government to address the suffering faced by the public and emphasized the importance of creating a conducive transportation environment through well-managed motor parks.
