Sunshine Stars captain Abe Sunday remains optimistic that the Akure-based side can secure a spot in the top three of the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League, despite their current position in the middle of the table, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Presently, Sunshine Stars are positioned 10th in the league table with 21 points from 16 matches. Despite not replicating their previous season’s form that saw them reach the Super 6 playoffs, where they won five, drew six, and lost five matches, Abe is confident that the team can turn things around.
The team has faced challenges recently, including the loss of their assistant kit manager, Taiwo Dosunmu, and the passing of the former governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu SAN. However, Abe stated that the team is fully focused on their goals for the season.
Abe emphasized their target to finish in the top three, citing their previous achievements in the abridged league and the Super 6 playoffs. Despite the tough weeks, he believes that with consistent efforts, they can close the seven-point gap to their target.
Reflecting on the club’s history in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, Abe expressed the desire for the current set of players to achieve similar success.
The team recently faced Doma United, dedicating their 2-0 win to the memories of Taiwo Dosunmu and former governor Akeredolu, who passed away. Sunshine Stars will play against Remo Stars in Ikenne on matchday 17.
