
In a recent operation tagged “Operation Sweep,” the Nnewi Vigilance Service in Anambra State successfully apprehended 30 individuals suspected of cybercrime and kidnapping. The raid targeted two buildings at Obiofia, Nnewichi-Nnewi, with the aim of combatting various criminal activities in the area.
The Nnewi Vigilance Service has been actively implementing a policy to maintain a secure environment, free from incidents of kidnapping, armed robbery, cybercrime, and exploitation of young individuals. During the operation, the vigilant operatives also rescued young girls allegedly being exploited by the suspects. Additionally, a haul of charms, mobile phones, and dozens of SIM cards was confiscated from the apprehended individuals.
A commander from the vigilante group stated that the suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation and potential prosecution. The facilities housing the suspects have been sealed by the Vigilante Group, marking the commencement of a more in-depth inquiry.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and disclosed that the investigation is already in progress. “The command has received the suspects, and interrogation has commenced,” he affirmed. The collaboration between the vigilante service and law enforcement underscores a concerted effort to curb cybercrime and related offenses in the region.
