In preparation for the African Games qualifiers in Lagos, Samuel Ajayi, the head coach of Nigeria’s women’s senior volleyball team, has unveiled a squad of 12 players. The qualifiers for the 2024 African Games are set to take place from January 4 to 8 at the National Stadium, Lagos. With aspirations to secure a spot and compete for a medal, the team is aiming for success after being absent from podium finishes since 2003. Ajayi has strategically chosen a roster that combines experienced players with youth, featuring five regular players, five U-21 players, and two U-17 players. Ijeoma Ukpabi has been named the captain, with Jummai Bitrus selected as the assistant captain. All participating teams are expected to arrive in Nigeria on Thursday, and technical meetings will be held on Friday, leading up to the start of the games on Saturday. Dare Kuti, media assistant to the President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, emphasized the team’s preparation, stating that the camp opened on December 26, and the players have been actively engaged. The federation, in collaboration with the technical committee, is ensuring that all necessary arrangements are in place for the players to deliver commendable performances.
