The National Population Commission (NPC) announced on Saturday that the 2023 census exercise was postponed to ensure the participation of the incoming administration in the data collection process. The Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Isiaka Yahaya, stated that the objective of the census was not just to collect data but to use it for planning purposes. Therefore, it was essential for the new administration to be involved in the data collection process to have faith in the data. Yahaya denied claims that the postponement was due to inadequate preparation or funding, stating that the federal government had provided all necessary funds. The census, originally scheduled to begin on May 3, 2023, was postponed indefinitely by the federal government. The new date will be determined by the incoming administration after President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval.
