On Saturday, a building under construction in Calabar Municipality, the Cross River State capital, collapsed, trapping and injuring many individuals. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported yet, and the injured have been rescued and taken to medical facilities for treatment. Initial investigations suggest that negligence and the use of substandard building materials were the causes of the collapse. The State Ministry of Urban Renewal had previously issued an advisory “Stop Work Notice” to the builder due to the use of substandard materials, but the builder ignored the notice. The State Ministry of Information and Orientation, in a statement signed by Mr. Eric Iso Anderson, has assured residents that the incident will be thoroughly investigated to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The government also encourages residents to continue with their daily activities and thanks the Ministry of Health for collaborating in transporting the affected persons to the hospital.
