A Lagos-based lawyer, Olumide Sonupe, was reportedly detained by the police while seeking bail for his client at the Moshalashi Police Station in Alimosho on December 30, 2023. Upon his release on January 1, 2024, after spending two nights with his client in the police cell, Olumide’s health deteriorated, and he was hospitalized. The incident occurred when Olumide went to the station to secure bail for his client, a carpenter detained for an alleged breach of contract. The lawyer claimed he was mistreated by police officers, including a Divisional Police Officer (DPO), who allegedly attempted to slap him. The lawyer’s brother and aunt sought his release, but the DPO reportedly rejected them as sureties. The lawyer accused the police of false charges and expressed pain and difficulty walking, eventually leading to his release. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is reportedly taking steps to seek justice in the matter. The police accused Olumide of acting “without decorum,” according to the Police Public Relations Officer.
