
A 27-year-old man named Adebayo Agboola has been arraigned at the Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly sexually assaulting a nine-month-old baby. The accused, who is a street urchin and resident of Ijora-Bada (shanti) area of Lagos, has been charged with defilement.
According to the prosecution counsel, DSP Kehinde Ajayi, Agboola committed the crime on March 23 at White Sand area, Ijora – Bada, Lagos when the 16-year-old mother of the baby left her child in his care to buy noodles nearby.
The offence is punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which states that anyone who has unlawful sexual intercourse with a child is guilty of a felony and is liable to life imprisonment.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje has ordered the remand of the accused at Kirikiri prison and directed the prosecutor to send the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice. The case has been adjourned until May 5.
