On Thursday, Frank Lampard unexpectedly returned to Chelsea as caretaker manager until the end of the season, more than two years after he was sacked by the Premier League club. Chelsea’s record goalscorer previously managed the team from July 2019 until January 2021, when he was replaced by Thomas Tuchel. Lampard’s move back to Stamford Bridge followed the dismissal of Tuchel’s successor, Graham Potter, last Sunday, with the club in the bottom half of the Premier League. Chelsea’s co-controlling owners, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, said they were “delighted to welcome Frank back to Stamford Bridge,” adding that they believed he had all the qualities they needed to drive the team forward. Lampard will lead the team through the remainder of the season while the club searches for a permanent head coach. The Blues currently have nine league games remaining this season, starting with Saturday’s trip to Wolves.
