The Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has been accused of treason by the Federal Government of Nigeria, according to the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed. Obi came third in the February 25 presidential election, behind Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu, who won the contest. Both Obi and Abubakar are challenging the results of the election in court. However, Mohammed believes that Obi is guilty of inciting people to violence over the election results and that this constitutes treason. During his visit to Washington, D.C., Mohammed met with various media outlets and accused Obi of inviting insurrection by urging Nigerians to reject Tinubu’s election victory. In response, Obi insisted that he had never encouraged anyone to undermine the Nigerian state and that his campaign had been based on issues, not ethnicity or religion. The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria disagreed with Mohammed, stating that Obi had a right to dispute the election results.
