On Saturday, April 15, 2023, the Labour Party emerged victorious in the Oji River State Constituency supplementary election. The election was held at Oji-River Central School Polling Unit, Registration Area/Ward 11, which had 2,489 registered voters. LP’s candidate, Chief Osita Eze, was declared the winner by INEC, having secured 108 votes in the supplementary election and over 300 votes ahead of other contestants from the March 18 election. Chief Jeff Mba of the Peoples Democratic Party, the incumbent, secured 118 votes in the supplementary election.
According to LP’s spokesperson, Dr Mcginger Ibeneme, the victory was hard-fought and marked the beginning of the people’s political emancipation. The election showed that the people of Oji River and Enugu State as a whole want genuine change and representation that includes everyone. The LP and its supporters faced brutalization and intimidation from thugs and security agents working for the PDP, but the people stood their ground and waited for the worst.
Dr Ibeneme expressed joy that the people of Oji River are currently celebrating the LP’s victory in all the 2023 elections held.
