An alleged shooting by a police officer at a checkpoint in Illah-Ugbolu road, near Asaba, Delta state, has resulted in the death of a young man named Onyeka Emmanuel Ibe.
The commissioner of police and the state government have both stated that investigations into the incident are ongoing, and that the police officer involved is in custody.
The traders at Ogbe-Ogonogo market, where the deceased was said to have traded in phones, were outraged by the killing of their colleague. They took his corpse to the state police command headquarters to demand justice.
Some of the protesters shared their account of what occurred on Wednesday morning in the state capital.
In an effort to calm tensions, the commissioner of police assured the protesting traders that the officer responsible is in detention and will be punished if found guilty.
However, the protesters were unsatisfied with this response and proceeded to take the deceased’s body to the government house to request the intervention of the state governor for a thorough investigation.
