Prof. Promise Mebine, the Director of the National Mathematical Centre, has urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to revise the establishment act of the center by elevating it to the status of a university.
Addressing the media on Friday in Abuja after a workshop held at the center, Mebine emphasized that transforming the center into the University of Mathematical Sciences would enhance the delivery of mathematics-related courses.
Established in 1988, the center spans 127 hectares with abundant resources, but Mebine highlighted that it has yet to fully fulfill its mandate. He stressed the importance of converting it into the National University of Mathematical Sciences to effectively achieve its goals.
Mebine clarified, “We don’t want to run undergraduate programs but postgraduate degree programs, master’s degree programs, and PhD programs,” focusing on the five core programs of the center: Mathematics, Computer Science, Theoretical Physics, Statistics, and Mathematical Sciences Education.
He revealed that the center had formally communicated with the NUC, outlining the reasons for the proposed upgrade.
Dr. Jimoh Ajani, representing the acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, acknowledged the request and assured that the NUC would review the proposal. Ajani also commended President Bola Tinubu for his significant support for the education sector.
