
The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has instructed the arrest of Afrobeat artist Seun Kuti for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Lagos. The IG has also demanded a prompt and thorough investigation into the incident and for the suspect to be prosecuted accordingly. Seun Kuti has claimed on social media that the police officer attempted to murder him and his family, but the police officer has since apologized.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adéjọbí, the IG has ordered the Commissioner of Police in Lagos to apprehend Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform. The statement emphasized that disrespect for authority figures would not be tolerated, and perpetrators of such crimes would be held accountable.
Seun Kuti had previously announced on Instagram that he would not press charges against the police officer, who apologized for the alleged attempt on his life and that of his family. However, in response to the IG’s arrest order, Seun Kuti has welcomed the investigation and pledged his full cooperation. He also expressed hope that whoever was at fault would be held responsible.
