Recently, Chief Timipre Sylva announced his intention to run in the governorship election for Bayelsa State. The media has been abuzz with this news, as it has sparked controversy due to Sylva’s controversial history in politics. Sylva’s intention to run has put a moral burden on him, as he had previously indicated during an interview with a Yenagoa-based private radio station that he would never contest the office of governor again. His sudden change of mind has raised questions about his credibility and the trustworthiness of his word. Additionally, there is factionalization within the Bayelsa APC party, which is happening under Sylva’s watch and leadership. The national leadership of APC needs to intervene to prevent Sylva’s ambition from destroying the collective destiny of the party and their chances of winning the upcoming governorship election. Many critical stakeholders in Bayelsa APC are uncomfortable with his leadership style and nobody trusts the other person. If Sylva is allowed to run, APC risks a kingdom divided against itself, and they will lose the governorship election.
